Why Your Next Laptop Costs More: RAM Prices Are Now the Line Item That Moves
A well-reviewed laptop got marked down this week for a reason that had nothing to do with the laptop. The Framework Laptop 13 Pro earned praise for its processor performance, its build quality, and its keyboard, and then lost points for price — with the review attributing the cost directly to high RAM prices. If you have been pricing a machine recently and wondering why the numbers look worse than they did a year ago, that is the explanation, and it is not going to reverse quickly.
Where the memory went
Memory manufacturers make DRAM on wafers, and there is a fixed number of wafers. The AI buildout consumes a specialized version of DRAM called high-bandwidth memory, which is built by stacking multiple dies vertically and connecting them with vertical interconnects through the silicon. That process consumes far more wafer area and yields worse than the flat modules that go in a laptop.
Manufacturers allocate wafers where the margin is, and accelerator customers pay in advance for supply commitments a laptop maker cannot match. Every wafer committed to a memory stack destined for a datacenter is a wafer not producing the module in your machine.
Why small builders feel it first
Supply shortages do not distribute evenly. The largest buyers hold contracts with fixed pricing and volume guarantees, so they are insulated for the length of those contracts. Everyone else buys closer to the spot market, and the spot market absorbs the entire adjustment.
That is why a specialist builder like Framework shows the increase before a mass-market brand does. It is not a sign that the smaller company negotiates badly. It is the structure of how memory contracts work, and it makes independent builders a useful early indicator for where mainstream pricing goes in six to twelve months.
What to expect on the shelf
Manufacturers dislike raising visible prices, so the more common response is to hold the price and reduce the specification. Expect base configurations to quietly ship less memory, expect the upgrade tier to become a larger share of the total cost, and expect soldered memory to look increasingly like a pricing decision rather than an engineering one.
That last point deserves emphasis for anyone buying now. In a market where memory costs are rising, a machine with upgradeable memory is worth a meaningful premium over one without, because it lets you buy less today and add later if prices ease. Machines with soldered memory force the entire decision at purchase time, at today’s prices, for the life of the device.
Practical guidance if you are buying in the next few months
Buy the memory you actually need rather than the memory you might need, if the machine is upgradeable. Buy generously if it is not, since the cost of being short is replacing the whole machine.
Check whether the model you are considering uses standard modules or soldered memory before comparing prices across brands, because two laptops at the same price with the same nominal capacity are not equivalent purchases when one can be expanded.
Treat storage separately. Flash memory is also tight, but for different reasons — capacity discipline after a severe downcycle rather than reallocation toward a premium product — and the two do not move together reliably. External storage remains a reasonable way to avoid paying an internal upgrade premium.
Refurbished and previous-generation machines are unusually good value right now, precisely because their memory was purchased under older contracts. A one-generation-old machine with more memory frequently beats a current machine with less, and in most real workloads memory capacity matters more than a single processor generation.
The part that is out of your hands
None of this resolves until wafer allocation shifts, and wafer allocation shifts when accelerator demand slows or when new capacity comes online. Both take quarters. Retooling a production line and requalifying product is not a decision that gets made and executed in the same season.
If you need a machine now, buy it and configure it for the long haul. If you can wait, waiting will not help before next year.
